The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has drawn attention to the letter issued by the District Police Office, Parsa, to My TV, a media outlet operating from Birgunj, seeking details and facts regarding a broadcast news report, despite the office having no jurisdiction over the matter.
According to the Parsa branch of the FNJ, the police office issued the letter based on a complaint filed by the Ward Chairperson of Birgunj Metropolitan City–31 regarding a news report about the removal of a husband's name from a woman's citizenship certificate.
The FNJ believes that the action taken by the police, without considering that the Press Council Nepal alone has the authority to hear complaints related to news content, is highly condemnable and constitutes interference in press freedom.
The FNJ draws the attention of the concerned authority to withdraw the unauthorized letter issued regarding the news report and to respect press freedom guaranteed by the Constitution.
